Expansion Joints

Expansion Joints

Expansion joints/ control joints are necessary part of concrete. As a general rule, concrete is going to crack. Expanding and contracting caused by the change of the seasons, from hot to cold, is why we use expansion joints controlling where the crack happens so it’s never visible.

There are two different types of expansion joints. At Colossal we generally always use the more difficult tooled expansion joints. With tooled joints, we literally run a line tool across the wet concrete to leave behind a seamless finished joint.

For some types of stamping and where is easy you rollover is necessary, we also use saw cut expansion joints. Saw cut joints are cut in after the concrete is completely finished, sometimes same day, generally within a week.
